The purpose of this research was to derive social network types, connected with outside the facilities, among older adults who reside in nursing homes and to probe the characteristics of each type of social network at the exploratory level. Data were obtained from 230 older residents in 30 nursing homes located at a metropolitan city in Korea. Eligibility criteria of this study required that the participants had cognitive abilities to respond to the questions and had lived in nursing facilities at least 6 months. A series of statistical methods such as latent class analysis, chi-square analysis, t-test and ANOVA were conducted to investigate social network types of nursing home residents. The results revealed that the nursing home residents had three distinct network types: child dependent type (68.3%), non-kin relation type (13.9%), and limited diverse type (17.8%). The older adults with kin and family intensive type showed that the number of children and the frequency of contact with children were above the means, but they rarely involved in religious activities and interaction with friends. Those with non-kin relation type rarely involved in interaction with children, friends and kin, and they were less likely to participate in religious activities. The elderly with limited diverse type had frequent contacts with children, friends and kin, and also were more likely to go to religious activities. However, there were significant relationship between social network type and their socio-demographic characteristic or health status. Based on the results of this research, implications for research, practice and policy as well as directions for future studies were discussed.
